The described area of conflicts forces many machinery and equipment manufacturers to search for new profitable growth options in order to secure long term business success. An investigation that was jointly carried out by the WZL and the consulting enterprise McKinsey & Company shows that these options cannot be found in the common business with new products. The focus of the business activity will shift into the areas of ‘performance systems’, the connection of products and services.

'Sustainable utilisation concepts' consist of strategies for the whole life cycle of a product. At the beginning influences on the product life cycle are identified. These are requisitioned to the configuration of possible life cycles. On that basis paths to bundle the physical product with corresponding services to performance systems are ascertained. These bundles can vary in time progress. Sustainable utilisation concepts, the strategies for the entire product life cycle, are determined. They configure the performance system over time.
Subsequently, the developed concepts are valued under economic and ecological aspects of machinery and equipment manufacturers and their stakeholders.

From the perspective of the machinery and equipment manufacturer, the creation of these performance systems can only be achieved by an integrated product and business design. Both processes have to be specially adopted to create the flexibility in physical products as well as in the organisation of companies to cope with the new challenge. The coordination of product development and the design of corresponding business structures and processes is realised in an expanded simultaneous engineering concept.hkeit
